You Only Have One Life
I saw a TV show featuring the author Bill Bryson tonight. He made the point that we are only alive for a short time. We once didn’t exist, and one day we will no longer exist on this Earth. I don’t mean this to sound depressing, though. I’d like to encourage you to see your life as an opportunity. I’d also like to encourage you to see yourself as your "job.” I think we owe it to ourselves to have the best possible life. I understand that there are many limitations on us, and I understand that we can be confronted by challenges and tragedies. However, I believe that we need to do whatever it takes to be as happy as we can possibly be.
Many people I talk to don’t really have a commitment to doing that. Many of us follow our society’s rules for living our life. In Australia, at least, our formula seems to be: Get an education; Get a job; Get a partner; Get children; Get as house; Get a bigger house etc. We only seem to have society’s permission to be happy just before we die - when we retire. I don’t think it needs to be that way.
I hope you will give some thought to what sort of life will give you the most happiness. However, I hope you’ll give a lot of thought to making a commitment to give yourself the life you deserve. It probably won’t be easy, but it will be worth it - because you are worth it.
